A thermocouple consists of two wires made from different metals, joined together at one end to form a welded junction. When this junction, known as the measurement junction, is heated, it generates a thermoelectric EMF (electromotive force). This EMF is proportional to the temperature difference between the measurement junction and the opposite end, known as the reference junction.
To measure the contact temperature, the thermoelectric EMF is recorded while maintaining the reference junction at a constant temperature or using automatic compensation for temperature variations. Importantly, the thermoelectric EMF depends solely on the types of metals used in the wires and is not influenced by their diameter or length.
